Current Progress

Our dedicated farm team has worked tirelessly since our inception. We have partnered with local agricultural engineers and farm managers, prepared the soil to support new life, and employed local families to produce compost. Various crops have been planted, and small animals have been introduced to the farm.

The Iraq Pilot Farm Project has currently initiated a variety of different regenerative farming concepts including:

 

1. Irrigation system – Drip Irrigation

Our Drip Irrigation system has been a prominent feature on our regenerative farm since our inception. It prevents disease, waste water, soil run-off and weed growth by minimizing water contact with the crops and surrounding area. Our irrigation system keeps the rows between plants to remain dry, saving water, time and money.

2. Water retention ponds/Outdoor Fishponds

Our water retention ponds have been dug in-ground and lined with a pond liner. They will be used to raise fish, and provide nutrients to our crops. Various plants like Duckweed, Azolla and seaweed can be raised in ponds to attract insects and/or feed fish directly. Fish water can be pumped to the irrigation storage tanks, serving as a large reservoir for irrigation. This will prevent the extraction of water and other natural resources from the surrounding area.

 

3. Grazing Livestock

A mix of goats, sheep, cows, and other grazing animals are vital to the regenerative aspect of the farm. They will all be holistically managed to prepare the land for planting crops by providing natural fertilizer for the crops and trees. Currently, we have ducks, chicken, cheap and geese on the farm, and are planning to add goats and cows. This will sustainably create healthier soil and farmlands.

 

4. Permaculture and Agroforestry

The trees will be planted in tight rows alternating patterns approx. 25-30ft apart. Specific tree species will be selected that are climate tolerant and have multiple functions. Additionally, fruit, nuts, and timber are being harvested from the trees.

 

 

The Future of the Iraq Pilot Farm Project

 

       1. Responsive Drip Irrigation

Our Responsive Drip Irrigation (RDI) will be installed 8in deep by a tape-injector and 16 inches apart. For trees, additional vertical feeders needed down the sides of the trees allows for deeper tree roots. This Irrigation system will be fed by gravity storage tanks and is designed to last 10-30 years once installed. Responsive Drip Irrigation uses 30-50% less water than Standard Drip Irrigation, which is 40% more efficient than conventional irrigation.

 

       2. Solar panels with battery storage (planned)

Our solar panels will provide our farm with affordable, sustainable solar energy. They will be ground-mounted, making it more efficient for maintenance. Simple, widely used techniques can be used keeping solar panels cool and clean. They will be powered by Gel Acid and Lithium-Ion battery.

Over the next decade, we aim to significantly enhance the region’s natural conditions, equipping local communities with the agricultural expertise and economic skills necessary to mitigate climate change impacts. This 20-acre farm will serve as a model for future regenerative projects in other vulnerable regions, guiding our efforts to replicate this success on a broader scale. Along with our dedicated farm team, partners and sponsors, we are searching for passionate individuals to help spread awareness and provide much needed donations to help our project reach its full potential.
